Substance abuse is a very common issue, both amongst adults and teenagers alike. Although most people think that it means purely recreational drugs, substance abuse can also refer to prescription medications, alcohol abuse and the misuse of other chemicals, to which the person develops a chemical or psychological dependency. The underlying causes of addictions of this variety are normally genetic and environmental, with negative life events making substance abuse more likely.
